Volunteer
The Glovers Reef Research Station accepts volunteers for 1-2 month periods to assist in the ongoing conservation and monitoring of the Glovers Reef Marine Reserve, independent projects, and running of the facility. The research station encourages Belizeans and internationals interested in gaining more insight into marine conservation and biology, to apply for a volunteer position at the station.
As a volunteer you would be involved in the daily operations of the research station, assisting scientists with preparation, and carrying out of fieldwork. This position is ideal for marine or environmental science students wishing to learn more practical skills in the field, and gain invaluable experience in survey techniques of coral reef ecosystems.
Current ongoing research includes:
Long term Atoll Monitoring Program (WCS - Quarterly)
Sea Turtle Monitoring Program (WCS - 2 per year)
Trophic Ecology and Movement of Stingrays (Independent Study - Bangor University)
Fisheries Catchment data collection (Monthly)
Shark abundance and distribution (Stony Brook University - Annually)
WCS supports the application of Belizean volunteers by covering room and board expenses.
Non Belizean volunteers need only pay a contribution to their room and board at US$38 per day, which will include all accommodation, meals, internet access, diving costs (excl. equipment), transportation to and from the atoll.
Due to the nature of some of the work involved, applicants must hold a SCUBA Diving certification card from a recognised association.
